The Foundations of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and structured method rooted in ancient yogic traditions, combining breath, movement, and meditation. It emphasizes the synchronization of breath (ujjayi sound) with a flowing sequence of postures (asanas) linked by transitions (vinyasas). This union of movement and breath creates a moving meditation that purifies the body, calms the mind, and fosters inner awareness.

The practice is based on series, beginning with the Primary Series, which detoxifies and strengthens the body. Each series builds progressively, cultivating flexibility, stability, and a deeper connection to the self. Central to the method are three foundational techniques: asana (posture), pranayama (breath), and drishti (focused gaze), supported by bandhas (energetic locks) and vinyasa (movement flow).

As Gregor Maehle explains,Yoga has always held that true knowledge is not something that just takes place in one's mind, but that true knowledge has a physical, a biochemical or bioelectrical component (although one should never reduce it to that component alone).”

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga offers not just a physical workout but a holistic approach to well-being. By cultivating discipline and self-awareness, it provides a path to personal growth and a deeper understanding of our mind-body connection.

This ancient system continues to inspire practitioners worldwide, offering a timeless framework for self-discovery and transformation.

"Helena has truly supported me in all aspects of my life through the way she has been teaching me and guided my yogic journey. From feeling rather insecure, unconfident and unbalanced as a person, I have become more committed, loving and happy with a stronger sense of self-worth."

"Four things Helena taught me that I will always bring with me, outside the mat.  Trust: I don't trust people - let alone women - but she made me trust her and let my body surrender under her care in the form of adjustments. She made me balanced when I wasn't and taught me how to let her do it.  Compassion and care: I learnt from her how to be gentle to myself and to accept my tears on the mat as part of my inner journey instead of being scared of them. She noticed me and asked me how I was.  Truthfulness: She taught me to put aside the fake drama and masks that I was carrying with me. I learn how to listen to my body as a means to get to my soul. Patience: She taught me to wait for the right time, to put my ego away, not to push hard so that I could go quicker into the asana. I started learning acceptance. And now I "just" have to keep practising that ;-)..."
